Thinking of ATB Sunday

Working today and that meant no ATB this year!  It was fun watching friends post on Facebook...good memories.

2nd of 2 12 hour day shift today  so that meant a meal break long enough to fit a 10K in.

Lunch Run

Back to work and running.   After a 3 day unplanned layoff it was a little 10Ker on the treadmill on my meal break.  Left Knee and Right Upper Quad complained a bit.  I always feel better and more fluid when ever I run on a daily basis.

Last long run before the LS100 + Why Gor-Tex Shoes are not always the best choice!

Headed out at noon today with Grant.   Looking for around a 4 hour run with some challenges so we could "make it easy" and thats more or less what we did.   -3C ,.  Snow , Wind and Sun we had it all!   Lost one layer today tying my Shell off around my waste before we started.   Wore my non Gor-Tex Super Novas with toe socks then the "Gator" sock...this was an experiment.  I love the Gator socks but I am worried about going 20 wet and cold hours in them,  worried for blisters.   The Toe Socks rock when  it comes to protecting the digits.  Feet got wet fast due to snow melting on the outside of the shoe.   Feet were a we bit chilled but not really that bad.   It was nice to keep 100% of the snow and what ever else I was kicking up out of my shoe. I am expecting a wet muddy LS100 so I want to keep all snow and rocks and what ever else out.  The shoes drain well so what seeps in should exit...   Gators socks  and Toes socks are in for the LS100.    Today we headed North on the 2nd looping ac cross the Holland / Glenelg towline the back down the Baseline  Instead of heading to Grey Rd 12 we cut across a side road where I gelled and then picked up the 2nd again towards my place.   Did a brief stop picking up another bottle of water and cookies.    Then headed South on the 2nd to the Mc Cormick Rd over to hwy 6 then back across the Rocky side rd coming out at Edge Hill.  Lots of added new hills today ,  a couple of K done on snow following snowmobile tracks. Finished feeling fresh like I had just started ready to bring on the LS100.

Gor-Tex shoes are not a;always the best choice.     Great in the snow ,  great on wet grass or through small puddles.  If you expect to submerge then then its not a good choice because they do not drain.    Did a little demo to satisfy my self and also to sell me on which shoe I will be wearing at the LS100.   Check it out ....

Mid 5 + 2014 Ultra "Theme Song"

5K@5am this morning.   2 more mids to go!

Surfing tunes this morning and came up with my 2014 Ultra "Theme Song" ....

Lyrics ...

"We're All In This Together"

It is such a drag, you're dressed in rags, everybody waving these faded flags, tongue tied a fire inside, caught like a deer in the headlights. Mine, mine, it isn't a lot so why try to take more than I got, more, more, we only want more, it's not what we came, for it's not what we paid for.

We're all in this together, so keep moving don't stop, keep moving don't stop We're all in this tougher, so keep moving don't stop, keep moving just go, go, go.

Every night I free fall into a dream, mirrored halls in the chrome machine, it's a phenomenon that goes on and on, saying it right but you're doing it wrong. Slow down you're going too fast now, a delicate dance take your foot off the gas now, don't try making it last now, sooner later you're a thing of the past.

We're all in this together, so keep moving don't stop, keep moving don't stop We're all in this together, so keep moving don't stop, keep moving don't stop. We may never be the same again, we may never be the same again, keep moving don't stop, keep moving don't stop, we may never be the same again, we may never be the same again keep moving don't stop, keep moving just go, go, go.

We are we are the angry apes, we don't want to look at no empty plates. We are we are the fire brigade, all we want to do is set the record straight. We are we are the first degree, we're the thief, we're the judge, we're the jury. We are we are the angry apes shake the fruit from the vine till there's nothing to take now.

It's a phenomenon that goes on and on, saying it right but you're doing it wrong, tongue tied a fire inside, caught like a deer in the headlights. Slow down you're going too fast now, a delicate dance take your foot off the gas now, don't try making it last now, sooner later you're a thing of the past.

We're all in this together, so keep moving don't stop, keep moving don't stop, we're all in this tougher, so keep moving don't stop, keep moving don't stop, we may never be the same again, we will never be the same again, keep moving don't stop, keep moving don't stop, we may never be the same again, we may never be the same again, keep moving don't stop, keep moving don't stop, keep moving don't stop, keep moving just go, go, go.

Mids

First mid tonight.  Getting off to a good start logging 5K on the treadmill on my lunch break.

Nice day

16K done ,  South on the 2nd to the edge of Durham then turn around and come back.   I was into a light breeze  heading out.  With the Sun it felt really nice.  I was only intending on a 10ker but I was really enjoying the Run so I made it longer.  Coming back I lost my cooling breeze and the Sun was on my back.  The hat came off and the Shell opened up but there were still beads of sweat rolling down my forehead.  Should have taken the shell off but I wasn't
going all that far so a wee bit warm wasn't worth the effort.

Facing the Elements

Took ti outside with Grant toady logging 30K in  around 4 hours.  This was a full dress rehearsal for the LS100.    Started out around -5C with 30kmh NW wind.    By the time we were done it was pushing -10C and the winds were as steady as ever.    Most of the run wasn't too bad but heading West towards Edge Hill it was out and out right nasty for a bit.   Only Gelled twice ,  went through 3 bottles of water and no S Caps.  Would have benefited from a few more calories in the last 10K but I cheeped out knowing the end was near.  I was always adjusting my jacket zipper and taking my hat on and off depending on the effort.  Goal was not to sweat too much and to stay comfortable.  15K in my hands got uncomfortably cold and was making things miserable.  Had two additional pair of gloves with me a double up what I was wearing and became rather toasty...crisis averted.  Its only 3 weeks until the LS100 ...one more longish run planned in a week and a bit then its time to rest up.

It was OK!

5K on the treadmill this eve.   Had lots of things to distract my thought from the though t that I was running on a treadmill...not so bad!

Lunch Run

Was going to take it outside today but Robin dropped in and we hung out in the hot tub...nice to catch up with him.  Working Eve I hit the Gym on my meal break logging a 5K Run the usual way.

Jarring

Jarring ...good word to describe what its like to run on a treadmill!    You think running on a cement track would be by far more jarring then running on a treadmill but it not,  not even close.  Working eves I hit the gym on my meal break and logged a 5ker.   On a more positive note I feel fully recovered after Saturdays 60ker.   I was a little tired and a whole lot hungry on Sunday.  Just had one of those lazy sort of days.

Longer at the Y

60K today at the Y.   First 40K at a 6:00 pace,  2K walk then changed gears logging 16K at a 7:30 pace and ended the Run with a 2K walk.

There were no major issues.  Sore feet plagued me the last few times I did this but not this week ,  not bad at all. When things started to hurt I would flex the foot ,  curl the toes and things seem to settle down.  Nailed the Hydration ,  Nutrition and Electrolytes.

2nd Run

Geared down to a 6:00 then 7:30 pace logging a 5ker on my lunch break.   It wasn't all that bad on the treadmill.

Outside

-10C,  Sun at my back and wind in my face on the way out ,  reverse on the way back.    Not so bad 11.2K logged today.

Back at it

5K lunch run this eve.  I am beginning to loose my love of running on the treadmill.  I did the long one Saturday ,  other then being tired and hungry on Sunday I felt marvelous.  Monday I felt even better.  All those little things that hurt always feel really good after going long. I cant explain it but the body responds well to running a Ultra a week.  Jump on the treadmill and my Knees hurt for the first K or so.   I use to exclusively run indoors in the winter. Perhaps knowing I was not going to take it outside made it mentally easier to take.  Perhaps running outside and track are making it more difficult to run treadmill.     So fickled!

In like a Lion

Returned to the Owen Sound Y yesterday.   Grant picked me up around 08:30 ,  we were on the track by 09:40 ran for a little over 6 hours covering a total of 55K.    More or less did the first 50K exactly the same as the previous week.  First 4 hour , 6:00 pace covering 40K followed by a 2K walk break then I downshifted to a 7:30 pace running another 11K until I walked the last 2K.      Grant and I will be back one more time for a 60ker next weekend then we start taking it outside in prep for the LS100.
